Fumoland

So, I'm not the only one who is beguiled by this toy. Fumo is my avatar on lj, and he's in a lot of my photos. Yes, I have a secret Fumo Gallery, too. He gets around the planet, visiting and getting his picture taken.

Fumo's not like Hello Kitty or My Melody, with a back story and mottos, but simply a character appearing as dolls, stationery and knick knacks. A few years ago, Tare Panda exploded in popularity in Japan. At the time, people found it appealing because he reflected the feeling of workers caught in the economic downturn of the 90s. I thought he was just lame. Now, I find myself drawn to this mufflered creature who somewhat mirrors how I feel. Eyes open, a little mysterious, and wandering around on a cloud. Um...

Fumo's back in town

Here he is rapelling down a line of fortune papers in front of the big shrine in Kamakura City. He accompanied the Seven Samurai on our daytrip April 29th. Fumo gets into all kinds of trouble at this shrine. One time, he found himself in the jaws of the shrine's lion dog.
